Howard County is "Iowa's year-round Playground." During the warm months visitors are able to enjoy canoeing, biking, hiking, golf, fishing, camping, and the beautiful scenery along the Upper Iowa and Turkey Rivers. As the weather turns cooler the challenge of hunting ducks, pheasants, partridge, deer and wild turkeys is experienced by many. Winter weather presents the outdoor enthusiast the opportunity to play in the snow on cross-country ski trails, or on the extensive snowmobile trail system that is rated the best in Iowa.
Towns include Chester, Cresco (the county seat), Elma, Lime Springs, Protivin and Riceville.
